Street Maintenance

Street Maintenance falls under the supervision of the Public Works Department, and is committed to providing an individual service to the citizens of Clemson, as well as a safe and pleasant work environment for their employees.

Public Works is dedicated to encouraging and educating the employees with the knowledge, skills, materials, and equipment necessary for peak performance. By providing good quality employees and proper management, the Public Works Department can offer efficient, cost effective services to the community in a timely manner that will preserve and enhance the quality of life for all in Clemson.

The street division is responsible for making sure our city streets are kept neat and clean keeping our signage looking nice and visible, and making sure all city streets are kept clear from debris and grass cut on the street rights of way.

City of Clemson has a crew that runs brush pickup routes throughout the week to pick up curbside brush and debris. To be picked up, all debris must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Large limbs and branches of 6 feet or less in length can be stacked at the street side for pickup (preferably parallel to the street to accommodate City Brush Tractor). (Information on mulch and the load a truck program is included in the "special handling" information below.) Please cut all limbs into lengths of no more than 6 feet, but lengths of 3 to 4 feet is better. NO BRUSH OVER 6FT WILL BE PICKED UP!
- All limbs, prunings, leaves, and grass clippings must be kept separate from other discards.
- No limbs generated by contractors will be picked up by the City. Contractors may bring limbs to the grinding site for a $7.50 per cubic yard fee, provided it is cup into 6ft - or smaller - lengths.
- City residents may bring limbs, prunings, leaves, and grass clippings to the grinding site located adjacent to the Public Works Facility at 1155 Old Central Road. There will be no charge for this service. The grinding site will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 5pm. Please bring an ID to show you are a City of Clemson resident.
- Grindings from our brush recycling operation will be available free to City residents. Free mulch may be picked up at the site. You must load your own mulch. Please bring an ID to show you are a City of Clemson resident. No more than one pickup truck load of mulch may be removed at a time. You must also have a tarp to cover your mulch before leaving the grinding site. The site will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 5pm.
- The City will deliver grindings to any resident. There will be a $10 per cubic yard delivery charge with a minimum quantity of five yards.
To see where your street is on the pickup schedule, check out our brush pickup dashboard.

The Sanitation Department WILL NOT remove contractor generated debris such as tree surgeon waste, shingles, building materials, cross ties, or special waste.

Brush that is picked up around the City is taken to our brush grinding facility and turned into mulch. This mulch is available for residents to pick up at no charge. Mulch can be delivered for a small charge with a minimum amount of 5 cubic yards.

Brush Grinding/Mulch/Recycling Center Hours
Tuesday – Saturday, 8:00 am – 4:45 pm
The Grinding/Recycling site is closed daily from 11:30am – 12:30pm for lunch.

Practical solutions in order to reduce the need for pesticide spraying:

- Keep gutters free of debris to eliminate standing water.
- Drain or fill low places where water stands on property.
- Turn over containers on property to reduce standing water and possible mosquito breeding sites.
- Dispose of old tires properly which are prime breeding areas.
- Keep swimming pool pumps operating and pools chemically balanced to reduce area for mosquitos or encourage property owners to drain pools not in use, and other similar practices.

NOTICE: When leaf season begins, the leaves will be picked up by the leaf vacuum truck starting sometime in October. The leaf vacuum truck will be in service until the end of the February or as determined by the Supervisor.
During leaf season (October to February), follow the below instructions for more efficient collection.
- Leaves should be raked/blown within 10 feet of the street. Long rows are better than large piles.
- Loose leaves will be picked up quicker than bagged leaves. If you bag your leaves, the vacuum truck will not pick them up. You will have to wait for the brush crew to get them.
- Please do not mix your leaves with brush, junk, or any other materials.
- Please do not pile your leaves around power poles, telephone and cable pedestals, or over water meters or sewer manholes. The machine will suck the lids off and damage the machine.
- In the beginning we will move quickly around the City, but as the leaves begin to accumulate, it will take longer to get around. Please be patient and we will get to you as quickly as possible. Please try to get your leaves out early so that as we come through your neighborhood we will get them the first or second time through.
Many use "pulverized leaf material" for mulch/ground cover around trees, flower beds and garden areas. If you would like this material dumped in your yard, please call 864-653-2053

Recycling

Effective August 1, 2022, the City of Clemson is no longer collecting curbside recycling. Residents who wish to continue recycling will be responsible for transporting recyclables to one of our local facilities.

The City of Clemson encourages those who wish to continue recycling to do so. Residents will still be able to drop-off their recyclables at the City’s Public Works Facility located at 1155 Old Central Road. This location takes #1 and #2 plastics, paper, and steel and aluminum cans.
